Mark T. Patterson (Pete) was born and raised in Everett Washington. He attended Everett High School, Everett Community College, then the University of Washington where he earned a Bachelors of Arts in Business, with a concentration in Finance in 1980. Shortly after graduating Mark began law school in Spokane, Washington, graduating from the Gonzaga Law School in 1983.

While attending these schools Mark began work as a messenger for his father’s old firm, Hunter Gates and Patterson, sometimes making court appearances with his Dad. By the time he was in law school he qualified as a Rule 9 intern and was trying cases as a prosecutor for the City of Everett.

After becoming licensed as a lawyer, then briefly practicing in Spokane, Mark moved back to his hometown and practiced in the same location with his father for many years primarily in the field of family law, then later estates, trusts and probate. Because he and his father share the same first name, “Mark”, his childhood nickname, “Pete” has stuck with him.

After his father, Mark T. Patterson Sr. retired, Mark remained in the same location until 2013 when Mark accepted an offer to move to Newton Kight where his practice remains concentrated in the fields of Estate Planning, Trusts, Probate, and Guardianship.  In addition he acts as a Family Law Consultant for the firm.

Mark has had many interests in life, including writing, which has lead to his authorship in the Washington State Bar Family Law Deskbook on the topic of Third Party Custody, a do it yourself publication, Divorce in Washington and a column each month in the Snohomish County Bar News, Lawyers Road Review. Mark also enjoys boat building, cycling, guitar and mountaineering. Mark is married and has three children, one of whom has special needs and has led him to work in the field of special needs trusts.
